Amish Batik

Amish Batik, by Florence Baturin
Pattern Name: Nine patch.
Large Quilt 82 x 90
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted

I fell in love with a package of 12 batik fat quarters at a Mancuso show. Several years later I found a photo of a wall hanging that would show off these fabrics to full advantage so I enlarged the pattern, bought black fabric, and voila!

Busy Fingers

Busy Fingers, by Carol Brown
Pattern Name: Hexagons.
Wall Quilt 31 x 40
Hand Pieced, Machine Quilted

My sewing machines were not available for 4 months after I moved. I had to do something, so handmade hexagons were the solution. I made up the design as I went along, resulting in as many leftover hexagons as I put in the quilt.

Celebration

Celebration, by Susan Campos
Third Prize, Large Quilts.
Pattern Name: Double Wedding Ring.
Large Quilt 81 x 81
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted

This Double Wedding Ring quilt was made to celebrate our 53rd Wedding anniversary, but its name also reflects my feelings when it was completed. I was inspired to attempt this pattern by the Victoria Finlay Wolfe exhibition of her DWR Quilts at the Spring 2017 MQX show in Manchester, NH. The quilting designs were inspired by Pinterest postings by Kim Bruner. I pieced, assembled and quilted the quilt on my domestic Bernina 200.

Clowning Around

Clowning Around, by Susan Campos

Wall Quilt 37 x 37
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted, Machine Embroidered

I bought the Amazing Designs clown alphabet designs back when they were distributed on 3-1/2" floppy discs. Fast forward a bit and I had a grand daughter in need of a wall hanging. It was a lot of fun accumulating the threads for the designs and the fabrics for the quilt. I like the results so much that this quilt may end up on my studio wall someday.

My husband used to weave so when I spotted this pattern I immediately wanted to make it for him. (OK, it did take a few years to get around to it.) He likes fall colors so that provided the palette. It was fun collecting and selecting the fabrics. It's a great pattern.

I enjoy the challenge of new techniques. This is true of "technical tucks", as developed in Caryl Bryer Fallert's work. The choice of color sequence is lots of fun.

Looking out my deck one evening, dusk was slowly transforming into night, and the landscape continuously changed into deepening, shades of purple and navy. The moon rose, lighting up the pond and sky into tones of lavender and shimmering blues. I experimented with satins, taffetas, and organza to replicate the scene.

The Sewatorium Sisters lost one of it's members last year, Mary D'Amico. We took in some of Mary's UFO's to finish. I believe these pine tree blocks were the last project she was working on. We thought of her and her love of quilting as we sewed. We miss her.

I have been collecting fun, bright fabrics for some time. I saw a quilt on Pinterest that looked similar and I thought it would be a great use of those fabrics.
