Lucky 13

Lucky 13, by Florence Baturin
Pattern Name: Two Hearts.
Challenge Quilt 32 x 48
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted

I won this Baker's Dozen (and then some) hearts in a block of the month raffle earlier this year. Which ones to select? I dutifully chose 13 red hearts so I wouldn't have my quilting hand cut off. Thanks to the thirteen anonymous quilters for contributing to my quilt.

Epilogue: My hand was spared but my right shoulder was fractured even though I counted correctly. Fortunately two helpers saved the day: Jo-Anne Granger cut fabric strips, stitched a few seams, and pressed the top; and Laurena McDermott machine quilted the lovely hearts quilting pattern.

My quite literal interpretation of the idiom - "a piece of cake." By keeping the techniques simple, this quilt came together in just a few hours of creativity. My 10-year-old daughter made the cake-slice beads for me. Thanks, Leslie!

Pattern Name: Winter Robins.
Challenge Quilt 20 x 24
Machine Pieced, Hand Appliquéd, Machine Quilted

One of the things that I love about New England is the winter sky and watching the birds that now & then appear. The main idea came from American Quilter magazine where I saw WInter Robins by Margaret Dunsmore. I combined traditional 9 patch with the Accidental Landscape technique and Nancy Howard's unique appliqué method.
