Books are Fun

Books are Fun, by Susan Campos

Wall Quilt 34 x 47
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted

I loved reading Richard Scarry books to my kids when they were small, and I love alphabet quilts. To make this quilt, which combines those two loves I fussy cut a piece of Richard Scarry fabric, sashed each block with a coordinating print, then combined the resulting alphabet blocks with Stack and Whack blocks made from primary color solids. An alphabet print from my stash made for the perfect backing.

Rising Sun

Rising Sun, by Susan Campos
Pattern Name: Glacier Star.
Wall Quilt 60 x 60
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted

This Judy Niemieyer Glacier Star quilt, with more than 1100 pieces, was paper pieced and quilted on my Bernina 200. The quilting was inspired by pictures from The Quilted Pineapple blog. Tone on tone thread was used to create texture but not overwhelm the design. A rigorous blocking returned the finished quilt to a flat and square presentation.

Shaman

Shaman, by Rachel Davis

Large Quilt 54 x 75
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted by Laurena McDermott

I was very drawn to the designs and colors in this fabric collection (Parson Gray/Free Spirit). Each fabric has an evocative name such as "Celestial Fire," "Peyote Moon," "Spirits Harvest," "War Paint." In keeping with the Native American motif, I decided to use the traditional pattern Bear Paw, surrounded by a neutral fabric to make the colors stand out.
