50th Wedding Anniversary Quilt, by Ginny Leonardos
Second Prize, Large Quilts.
Pattern Name: Farmer's Wife Sampler.
Large Quilt 104 x 104
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted, paper pieced Quilted by Laurena McDermott
At first, making 111 blocks felt overwhelming, then it ended up like eating potato chips, I couldn't make just one! I worked on a difficult block then a few easy ones. Before I knew it I was done. To make it king-size, I added the hour-glass blocks to showcase each sampler block. It was made to celebrate my 50th wedding anniversary coming in 2015.
Flowers Grow in the Cracks in the Pavement, by Ginny Leonardos
Pattern Name: Hexagons.
Wall Quilt 48 x 65
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
This was such a fun quilt to work on! It is made up mostly of 2 1/2 inch strips, so I was able to use my stash. When I found the background fabric which is city buildings and streets, I had the perfect name!

Feel Me Up..., by Phyllis Maddox
Wall Quilt 30 x 36
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
... but not here in front of God and everybody with white gloves.
I read an article in a quilting magazine about a group making textured quilts for visually impaired children. It sounded like a good idea so I made a few.
Batik Pillow, by Phyllis Maddox
Pillow 15 x 15
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted, Machine Embroidered, Fused, Hand dyed
I used a Double Diamond ruler and fused fabric to make the interlocking diamonds on the front. The back is hand dyed flowers drawn from a template, surrounded by Ribbon Weave stitching from Machine Quilting magazine. I made a pillow to see how much wear and tear the double diamonds can take.
Rail Fence Benefit Quilt, by Gwen Marceline
Pattern Name: Split Rail Fence.
Large Quilt 63 x 81
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
I love using this pattern as it's fun to make and allows lots of opportunity to play with color and value. I quilted it at Laurena's Longarm Quilting studio. Special thanks to Marilyn Jackson who donated some of the lovely fabrics used for this benefit quilt.
Clouds of Contrast, by Kathleen McCormick
Pattern Name: Venetian Tiles by Quilt Queen Design.
Large Quilt 78 x 80
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
This pattern caught my eye a few years ago. The light colored fabrics were "cast-offs" from another project. The blocks are nine patches that are cut on an angle. The remaining triangles were used in the outer border. It reminds me of the evening sky, before a storm or during a sunset.
Kaleidoscopic Illusions, by Kathleen McCormick
Pattern Name: Marco Polo by Saginaw St. Quilt Co.
Large Quilt 65 x 84
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted by Laurena McDermott
A fabric collection of red and blacks caught my eye. Garabaldi Prints were produced from 1875 to 1925 and were primarily red with black printing. Of course, other fabrics needed to be added to the collection in order to make this quilt, an interpretation of a kaleidoscope pattern. I loved the geometric nature of many of the fabrics and the secondary patterns that the kaleidoscope produces.
Arrowheads for Me, by Delores McCravy
Pattern Name: Arrowhead.
Large Quilt 67 x 67
Machine Pieced, Hand Quilted
This quilt was made from blocks pieced by RSQ members. I was lucky enough to win them at one of the "block of the month drawings". Can you identify the one/ones you made?
Little Ball of Fire, by Delores McCravy
Wall Quilt 22 x 22
Hand Appliquéd, Hand Quilted, Beaded
Our quilt bee's challenge, this year, was to create a depiction of the sun. My sun is based on a design by Gina Tepper, founder and designer of the website Giftdecorating.com. The face in the center is of my granddaughter, Eva, who is always so energetic and busy as a bee.
Signature Beauty, by Laurena McDermott
Wall Quilt 54 x 54
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
I was privileged to be the President of Rising Star Quilters for the last three years. It was wonderful to work with a group of caring lovely people. I was given this beautiful quilt top as a token of appreciation from the guild. It is a gift I will treasure in the years to come.
Ella's Favorite Horse , by Jean Necheles
Wall Quilt 23 x 34
Machine Appliquéd
A favorite picture of her favorite horse. I saw a picture of my niece, Ella, on her favorite horse and thought it would make a wonderful quilt. This is the results, my first machine appliqué wall hanging, a gift to her on her 15th birthday.

Spring Time Table Runner, by Helen Pride
Wall Quilt 14 x 35
Hand Appliquéd, Machine Quilted
This was my answer for our bee's fabric challenge. I was tired of the winter dreariness so I used my bright "happy" scraps to make this table runner, using 2 pieces of the bee's fabric for 2 of the leaves.
Flying Cranes, by Evelyn Rossin
Third Prize, Large Quilts.
Pattern Name: Oriental Flight from 9-Patch Pizzazz by Judy Sisneros. .
Large Quilt 90 x 102.5
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
I enlarged this design from a wallhanging pattern to fit the top of my daughter's queen size bed, and added the large borders for the sides and bottom. The blocks consist of fussy cut focus blocks and nine patches. It was quilted in the Baptist Fan pattern on the Statler machine at Laurena's Longarm Quilting.
Kaffe Fassett Tropical Sunset, by Kit Ryan
Pattern Name: One Star Two Star.
Large Quilt 78 x 55
Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted
Basted it after working a night shift; trimmed the back and batting, and thought there was something wrong; in the evening before I left for work I realized I had not done its border. Finally added the borders, and the batting, and the backing (sigh), but it was worth it.
