Playing with Purple

Playing with Purple, by Tricia Rosenthal

Wall Quilt 50 x 58
Machine Pieced, Hand Appliquéd, Hand Quilted

The purple, red, and blue Japanese block print fabric was the genesis for the design, along with a stash of hand-appliquéd hearts looking for a home. I took a long time designing the border to make sure it set off the quilt and made it look like a completed piece.

I started these sparkling stars, which were part of Cambridge Quilts block-of-the-month series in 2006 and taken from Judy Martin's book, Knockout Blocks and Sampler Quilts. I pieced two duplicate stars each month, and added a few more after the year ended. My husbands favorite color provides the night sky background. The quilt should keep us warm during the cold months to come.

Bartlett Pears

Bartlett Pears, by Missy Shay

Wall Quilt 34.5 x 56
Machine Pieced, Machine Appliquéd, Hand Quilted, Machine Quilted, Fused

This Jayme Crow (book: Stitch and Split Appliqué) pattern was on Simply Quilts. The raw edge appliqué intrigued me. I began hand quilting the vines, then put the quilt away for a year. When I returned, I found that I had lost the handmade stencil and had to recreate it. I love how the yellow binding enhances the quilt.
